The plant which is the source for both diterpenes has been used for thousands of years in Mediterranean countries as a flavor and fragrance agent. Sage is in F.C.C. GRAS based on German therapeutic monograph; allowed for internal use in dyspeptic complaints, and as a diaphoretic; internally for inflamed oral mucous membranes. Both sclareol and sclareolide have GRAS status and have been used in bakery, flavor and food industries.

We are the first one to evaluate both compounds for their weight loss properties. Like Forskolin, we observed that Sclareolide is also an adenylyl cyclase activator. cAMP assays indicate that Sclareolide has a similar activity profile and potency as that of forskolin, a well established adenylyl cyclase activator. We believe that these agents act by selectively activating secondary messenger pathways. Forslean™ ( 10% Forskolin) is marketed by Sabinsa Corporation for management of body weight by promoting lean body mass.
