Resistant Hypertension

PRODUCT OVERVIEW & DESCRIPTION FOR RESISTANT HYPERTENSION

SP002 is a specially formulated medical food product, consisting primarily of a proprietary standardized extract of a GRAS plant, addressing the clinical dietary management of the metabolic processes of hard-to-treat hypertension.

Metabolic processes specifically the processes involved in the metabolism of endothelin are important in the progression of hard-to-treat hypertension. Endothelin is a peptide made by the body in the endothelium. It constricts blood vessels and elevates blood pressure. Elevated endothelin blood levels are associated with several cardiovascular diseases. In a recent large study involving a total of 1,492 subjects high levels of plasma endothelin predicted the development of hypertension in subjects with normal blood pressures (Kumagae SI et al. American Journal of Hypertension (2010). doi:10.1038/ajh.2010.125).

The plant has been used extensively in traditional Native Americans (Lumbee and Cherokee) and is a GRAS plant. We are developing SP002 a medical food product, consisting primarily of a proprietary standardized extract of a GRAS plant, for the clinical dietary management of the metabolic processes of hard-to-treat hypertension specifically the processes involved in the metabolism of endothelin.

  • SPOO2 inhibits in vitro aortic contractions and lowers blood pressure of normal and hypertensive rats (The FASEB Journal 2009, 1017.37).
  • SP002 is a potent inhibitor of endothelin pathway.
  • SP002 is highly enriched with Myriceric Acid A that inhibited endothelin receptor A (ETA) with a Ki = 66 nM.
  • Myriceric acid A inhibited the endothelin-1 (ET-1)-induced increase in [Ca++ ] flux in rat aortic smooth muscle cells (I50 = 10 nM)
  • Myriceric acid A inhibited endothelin production in a dose dependent manner in human vascular cells (IC50 = 4.3μM).
  • SP002 inhibited ET-induced contraction in the isolated rat aortic rings

A patent (pending) discloses formulations of standardized extracts of wax myrtle (SP002) for the management of various diseases. The patent also claims methods for the preparation of the proprietary extracts that are highly enriched in specific compounds that can provide benefits to these patients.
