SP001 is a specially formulated medical food product, consisting primarily of a proprietary standardized extract from a GRAS plant, for the nutritional requirement of ex-smokers and smokers. SP001 is formulated as a capsule for oral administration and will be dispensed by prescription under physician supervision.

Smoking introduces extremely high concentration of oxidants that disturb the balance between the oxidants and antioxidant mechanisms that protect against the reactive oxidant species (ROS). The resulting oxidative stress can lead to many lung diseases, including cancer, asthma and COPD. We are developing SP001 a medical food product, to meet the special nutritional requirements of antioxidants or antioxidant mechanisms in smokers or ex-smokers. SP001 primarily consists of a proprietary standardized extract from a GRAS plant that has been used extensively in traditional medicines.

We have three different published patents (pending) disclosing formulations of standardized extracts for the management of various diseases. The patents also claim methods for the preparation of the proprietary extracts that are highly enriched in specific compounds that can provide benefits to these patients.

GRAS STATUS

The plant has been in commerce since early 1970’s in the United States of America. The flavor material isolated from the plant has been a an important commercial product in food, tea and beverages. In addition, the plant has a lengthy history of usage in humans, and has been used in traditional tea and as flavor agent in foods. This product has also been used in Meditarranean traditional food and flavors. Since the plant has already been marketed as a commodity in the U.S. A, prior to 1994, and is being consumed by humans, this would make the plant a GRAS product under DSHEA guidelines and qualifies as a plant material that can be used as a nutraceutical product to manage wellness.
